Thuja wood marquetry inlay
Morocco's woodworking tradition began around the 14th century. Southern artisans continue the legacy. They sculpt exquisite items from the rare and beautiful Thuja tree, which grows in the magnificent Atlas Mountains. Its wood prized for its lustrous patina and durability.
Marquetry, or inlaid wood, was once coveted by nobility, wealthy merchants, and royal courts to adorn their homes, palaces, and ceremonial spaces with luxurious wooden furniture, plates, decorative panels, and screens.
